What flew at the Mountain Home AFB air show?
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds were the principal demonstration team. Their appearance ended an eight-year gap since the team’s June 2018 Mountain Home visit. Official 366th Fighter Wing imagery documents the F-16 demonstration over the base on May 16.
The announced program also included the Navy EA-18G Growler demonstration, an A-10C Thunderbolt II, an F-15E Strike Eagle, an Idaho Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk and the U.S. Air Force Academy Wings of Blue parachute team. Historic-aircraft participation included an F-86 Sabre, P-38 Lightning and the C-47 known as Betsy’s Biscuit Bomber. Civilian performers and ground displays rounded out the program.
Thunderbirds return after eight years
The Thunderbirds deployed roughly 70 team members to Mountain Home. The team’s advance pilot arrived before the main formation to inspect the show site for obstacles, sight-picture issues and other hazards. That site-survey work is part of preparing a military demonstration team for a location it has not flown recently.
Mountain Home was one stop in the Thunderbirds’ 2026 season. For future appearances, use the current airshow schedule and verify the date with the official team or host installation before traveling.
What happened during the Sunday show?
On May 17, two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growlers assigned to VAQ-129 collided during their demonstration. Mountain Home AFB reported that both aircraft crashed away from the crowd and all four aircrew members ejected successfully. Emergency responders secured the scene and authorities closed part of State Highway 167 during the investigation.
The collision is a separate safety story from the overall event guide. Read the documented Gunfighter Skies EA-18G incident report for the official facts and response.
Why is it called Gunfighter Skies?
Mountain Home AFB is home to the 366th Fighter Wing, known as the Gunfighters. The wing traces the nickname to its Vietnam-era F-4C operations, when crews addressed the aircraft’s short-range combat limitations. The unit moved to Mountain Home in 1972 and today operates F-15E Strike Eagles while also hosting Republic of Singapore Air Force F-15SG training.
The air show’s name therefore refers to the host wing’s identity, not an individual performer or a type of aircraft.

The featured image on this page comes from that archive and has descriptive filename, title, caption, credit and alternative text for accessibility and image-search context.
Planning for a future Mountain Home air show
The 2026 show is over, and a future edition has not been assumed here. When another event is announced, check the Mountain Home AFB website for dates, gate hours, identification requirements, prohibited items and traffic instructions. Active-base access rules can change between editions.
For 2026, the base opened the event free to the public, with gates opening at 9 a.m., the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and flying ending at 4 p.m. Those historical times should not be reused as a future schedule without a new official announcement.
